Answer

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimises for search engines that return a list of links for the buyer to choose from. GEO optimises for AI assistants that return one answer with the recommendation already made. A brand can rank first in Google and still be absent from that answer, because assistants weigh citations and third-party authority differently.

The two disciplines share a foundation and diverge sharply at the point that matters commercially: what the buyer is shown.

A list versus an answer

Search returns options. Ten links, and the buyer decides. Ranking third still puts you in the consideration set, and a good page can win the click from a worse-ranked position.

An assistant returns a conclusion. There is no consideration set — the shortlist has already been drawn and the recommendation already made. Second place is not a weaker position; it is usually no position at all.

What each one rewards

SEO rewards relevance to a query and authority expressed largely through links. GEO rewards being the clearest available answer to a question, and being corroborated by sources the model already trusts. That second part is why GEO work often happens off your own site entirely: assistants cite third-party pages constantly, and you cannot rank your way onto someone else's domain.

Why good rankings can coexist with invisibility

Ranking is measured against a keyword. Assistants are asked questions. A page optimised to rank for a two-word term may contain no sentence that answers the question a buyer actually asked, which leaves an assistant nothing quotable to lift. This is the most common reason a brand with healthy search traffic is missing from AI answers entirely.

Should we stop doing SEO?

No. Assistants lean heavily on crawled and indexed content, so a site search engines cannot read or understand will not be cited by an assistant either. Technical SEO is the floor GEO stands on. What changes is what you write and where you pursue authority.

Do the same keywords matter for GEO?

Less than you would expect. Buyers type keywords into search boxes and ask full questions of assistants. Question-shaped phrasing, and content that answers those questions directly, matters more than keyword density or exact-match terms.

Can you measure GEO with rank tracking?

No. Rank tracking measures position in a list that assistants do not produce. Measuring GEO means asking assistants buyer-style questions repeatedly and recording whether your brand is named, whether you are cited, and who appears instead.
